This book contains a collection of 5 original, interesting, fast-paced children’s stories set in rural sub-Saharan Africa where life aspirations and choice of role models for children and young adults are not determined by social media frenzy, but by cultural interactions that include folklore, cultural events and storytelling. These stories could offer non-African children as well as African children born and raised in the diaspora, the opportunity to explore other customs and lore through the eyes of their peers in these less affluent settings. Exposure to this multiplicity of different but equitable cultural expressions could lead to respect for cultural diversity, which in turn could mold readers into young people and adults who dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different linguistic and cultural groupings.
This little volume contains 20 of the best-loved of Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. Without giving away the flavor of the original, the author has translated them in English prose, and adapted them for use by young readers. Writing in French verse, Jean de la Fontaine mostly uses animal characters to criticize human behavior. The first volume of Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables was published in 1668. Today, they have been translated into all major languages and are read by millions of children and adults around the world.
